Google.com Blocked by OpenDNS

Calling OpenDNS! What’s going on?! I don’t live in China you know!

UPDATE 1: OpenDNS blocks Yahoo and Twitter too!

UPDATE 2: I removed OpenDNS, entered PLDT’s DNS settings and restarted both my Linksys wireless router and modem. That seemed to have solved the problem. It looks like OpenDNS is misinterpreting my IP address as that of someone who lives in China a communist country.

If you’re wondering what PLDT’s DNS are, you can try out these:

58.69.254.71
58.69.254.133
58.69.254.3
58.69.254.8
58.69.254.138

  1. OpenDNS only blocks what you want it to block, that user had “portals / search engines” category selected in his what to block options.

I have been a OpenDNS user for 2 years now, i’m admin for 3 networks and they have ALWAYS only blocked what i HAD selected, its just that all those new categories let you fine tune what you want to block.

  2. @Brown: I’m aware of that. These screenshots were by me on my computer. I would know if I blocked any sites on my network. But I didn’t. So why does OpenDNS block a bunch on sites not only on my computer, but on several pc’s who are not part of my network? I know for a fact that two of my friends are experiencing the same problem.

  3. I’ve been using OpenDNS and PLDT DSL for a long time now and I’ve never encountered that problem. OpenDNS has only blocked the websites that I’ve set it up to block.

  4. It’s been about a month now and I’m encountering the same problem. In fact, it’s gotten weirder. I tried to access youtube and I got the a similar looking page; except the text has changed. It now says : “IF YOU EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM, SEND SMS TO 2331(GLOBE/SUN/TM) AND 231(SMART/TNT) type BB JOSEF or also type BB NIKKI” (in the red font part) What the hell? Voting for the love team in Pinoy big brother teen edition will solve this problem?? Jeez. What’s going on???

  5. ok, i didnt even dl openDNS, and its on my computer… weird!
help, i want it off, coz its blocking everything – facebook included – pls help, i want it gone, how do i do it, coz there is no trace of it on my computer, just when i try go on the net…

  6. This happens to us too. It blocked google, yahoo, yahoo mail, friendster, and multiply. We’re on globe broadband internet. This sucks!

  7. Mine got blocked too…I can access google websites, but can’t access google. It’s like the screenshot up there. Damn, I so hate it.

  8. Just like a tick on a dog, Linksys pre-populates the DNS server addresses in the Linksys control panel without any warning or opt-out offer. To revert to your previous settings, you must have recorded them if fixed. Mine were dynamic (did not know this until I got into it). I dialed up the Linksys control panel in the address line of my browser (192.168.0.1 in my case & the default), deleted the primary and secondary DNS addresses on the WAN tab, and clicked on save changes. Presto!

  9. That has happened to me too. I don’t use OpenDNS and it blocks the most mundane sites like Google and YouTube. It even attaches a strange message like “Smoking is dangerous. Smoke MJ instead.”

    What the hell?

  10. You should ask why Open DNS uses a Trojan to get into your system and change your DNS in the first place!

  11. OpenDNS what’s wrong with you? Philippines is not China, kindly explain why you guys block so many sites, (youtube, yahoo music, yahoo movies, hotmail and etc….)
