Feels Great to be Pinoy

Google’s Aileen Apolo tagged me for this meme: What are the 3 signs you see happening now that make you say, “it feels great to be Pinoy”? Thanks to the Macalua who started this meme.

1. Filipinos actors, directors, musicians, artists and sportsmen from the Philippines are making waves internationally. Lea Salonga, Manny Pacquiao, Efren Bata Jr. (idol!), Paeng Nepumoceno, Cecil Licad — they are the best at what they do. The list can go on and on. Not only that, Filipinos are dominating the nursing and outsourcing industries here and abroad. In short: we help make the world go round!

2. Can I say I’m proud to be Davaoeno? Nothing beats Davao City in terms of livability, cleanliness, peace and order and low cost of living. This alone makes me proud to be born here. (hint: invest here now!)

3. Filipinos are smarting up. Like what Marc said, if you’re a celebrity it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re going to win an election as proved by the recent polls. Even though there are those ubiquitous trapos (ancient politicians) and dynasaurs (political dynasties), I’m just happy I won’t see Richard Gomez, Cesar Montano and Tito Sotto in office. I’m proud of Manny Pacquiao (see #1), but what does boxing have to do with running a city?

I’m gonna tag a few people for this: Ria, Kim, Shari, Max, Chris, Michael and Eric.

  1. @Aileen: Salamat sa tag!

@Eric: Np! It’s my first time too! Looking forward to your answers.:D

  2. Andrew,
Davao is indeed a great place. I’ve had fond memories of it. The last I was there, though, was almost 10 years ago.

One thing I’m particularly proud of right now as a Filipino, and more particularly as someone from Mindanao—specifically Polomolok, South Cotabato—is that Manny Pacquiao got knocked out in Polomolok and the other areas in the district during the elections. Yes, Manny is a great fighter, maybe the best the world over. Yes he is a good man, he helps poorer folks in his community. But like what you said, but what does boxing have to do with running a city?

  3. @Rico: Dynasaurs.. akk.. hate them!

@Max: You should revisit Davao in October (’07) for the Mindanao Blogging Summit! I’m part of the organizing committee. We’re still in the planning stages so I can’t offer much details yet. But I hope to see you here!

  4. Yup i agree… it feels greet to be pinoy…

Many Pacquiao realy has the pinoy

power punch that threatens most of the mexican

    boxers…

In some field, i can say that pinoy are not

only good in sports – Physically, but

    pinoy are smart also… agree?

In fact Philippines is becoming more

    involved in Information Technology(IT)…

    Philippines is creating new generations

of IT enthusiast such as graphix artist

    and web programmers.

  5. I’m am a proud Filipino even though I was raised for most of my life in Canada. Culture-wise, I probably identify with being “Canadian” a bit more than being “Filipino”.

In my experience, I’ve met a lot of Filipinos who moved to Canada for supposedly better opportunities, but ended up not being able to use their education here. Doctors working in factories, nurses working as admin assistants, teachers working in retail, etc. Sad, really. They may have been better off staying in the Philippines.
