Got a nice little present from Dennis Agulo a few days ago. It’s a Google shirt!! He won it at the Women in Web talk here in Davao courtesy of Google’s Aileen Apolo. I wore it all day today although it was kind of big.

Photoshop Tutorial: The Hedcut Effect

I first encountered this type of illustration while reading the Wall Street Journal during my days studying at Pratt Institute in New York. Back then I had no idea what it was called or how it was done.

From Wikipedia:

Hedcut is a style of drawing, primarily of people, pioneered and used by The Wall Street Journal. The drawings are traditionally 18 by 31 Picas (3″ by 5.167″), and use the stipple method of many small dots to create an image. They are designed to emulate the look of woodcuts from old-style newspapers, and engravings on certificates and currency. The phonetic spelling of “hed” may be based on newspapers’ use of the term “hed” for “headline.”

This interview was more than two months in the making! But I’m glad that Christopher “Topher” De Leon (no, not that Christopher De Leon!) found time to answer my questions about his site, TristanCafe. TristanCafe is an extremely popular (Alexa Rank: 11,281) forum-based community that serves as second home for many Filipino teenagers and students where they can talk just about anything under the sun. As Topher puts it, his site is the “tambayan ng mga walang magawa sa buhay” (rough translation: hangout for people bumming around).

Alleba Blog: How and when did TristanCafe begin?

TristanCafe: The TristanCafe.com domain started on September 22, 2002. But we actually started the website even before that, as a simple homepage in Geocities. It was initially just a personal site, sort of like an online venue where we can share our ideas and just try out things and have fun. A creative outlet.

The Joys of Dial-Up

It’s probably karma. The Wifi pirate that I am, it’s inevitable that this should happen. Once again, my ever-unreliable PLDT MyDSL decided not to cooperate anymore. My whole neighborhood’s affected, and PLDT doesn’t know when it’ll be back up. This happened two days ago too.

gateway cinema

Today I ate lunch with my family at the Gateway Mall in Araneta Center. We were choosing between Italianis and Cafe Adriatico, but settled for the latter after a lengthy debate. After eating my meal of Adobo Spareribs, I wished we went for Italianis. The food there is just way better. But still I enjoyed my dessert of Suman sa Lihiya paired with a shot of Chocolate Eh (pronounced cho-ko-lah-teh — eh).

so this is what's causing traffic

I’m back in Manila. Wow. I am realizing that slowly, I’ve become some sort of a country mouse right in the city that I spent a good 7 years in. Sometimes I think that my moving back to Davao was a bad thing. But seeing what I’m seeing right now, the suburban life ain’t so bad after all. It could be the holiday season, or just the rush of people going home to their provinces, but traffic here is ten times worse compared to three years ago. That, despite all of the infrastructure put in place that siphoned Mindanao’s share of the national budget. I don’t want to rant about politics, but man, Manila needs to get a grip!

How to Monitor your Website Via SMS

I wrote about a free website monitoring service called Montastic last January and thanks to them I figured out how really sucky my webhost is. Not all my sites are what you would call extremely successful, but I’m proud to say that they bog down their respective servers from time to time. Anyway, for quite a while I was thinking how cool it would be if Montastic would send me an SMS everytime they find my sites to be down. Easy.
