google talk logoGoogle announced three new features to its instant messaging software, Google Talk:

File Transfer
‘Bout time. Its absence may have been the reason why many have stayed away from it. It’s reported that only 44,000 were using Google Talk, or 1% of total market share — way behind MSN Messenger (60%) and Yahoo! Messenger (23%). People like to chat and share stuff, it’s a given fact.

Ahh. Yes, the weekend! I’m gonna hit the gym and catch up on my anime shows (Bleach). The rest of the time I’ll be drafting article ideas and laze around in general.

If you missed some stuff this week, here’s a quick look back:

(Kazaa) Want Legal Music and Movies

It’s a done deal. Kazaa has agreed to shell out $115 million to the record industry to pay for its sins of the past. And not only that, version 3 of their once popular software has been released, but now works just like its predecessor Napster where users have to pay for what they download. This is just another nail on the coffins of Limewire and eDonkey who are up next for a dirty round of settlements.

For anyone using Randy Peterman’s StatTraq, there’s a small bug in one of the files that might cause an error message to appear at the footer of your Wordpress blog.

Open up stattraq.php in a text editor and scroll down to line 90 (approximately).

Change:

else if($strpos($ua, 'MSIE 2') !== false)

to

else if(strpos($ua, 'MSIE 2') !== false)

Save the file and upload to your server.

Edit N Place Plugin for Wordpress

I was doing my homework on upgrading my plugins a while ago and discovered an awesome Wordpress plugin called “Edit N Place” by Headzoo’s Sean Hickey. It kinda speaks for itself. Made possible with AJAX, what it does is it allows you to edit your articles, their categories and tags right from your blog’s front page! What a time saver! One of the best Wordpress plugins ever created. Add that to my list of plugins I can’t do without.

Here’s a screenshot of the plugin at work:

Wordpress Upgrade

Easier than I thought, whew. I just upgraded my Wordpress software from version 1.5 to 2.0.3. Even though I’ve read a lot of bad things about it, it’s still way better! The best thing is that all my plugins are compatible. But I think I have to upgrade them to their newest versions.

Some plugins I cannot do without:

  • Photopress
  • Related Posts
  • Bunny’s Technorati Tags

If you know of other essential plugins I should include, leave me a note!

Looking for the best deals on computers, peripherals and gadgets in the Philippines?

TipidPC.com is the leading resource for buying and selling brand new and second-hand computer parts and peripherals in the Philippines.

TipidPC is the brainchild of Jesus A. Domingo and has been online since July 2001 (about the same as Alleba.com). I hope to interview Mr. Domingo soon since not much information is available from their site. Nevertheless, TipidPC has an enormous following and has a good number of brick-and-mortar establishments doing business with them. Last I checked, there were 715 users currently browsing the site! Wow.

How a Dumb Idea Can Make You Rich

It doesn’t just take a great idea to make it big, but actually have the gall to to go for it even if it’s so fantastically stupid.

Take this wise-ass guy from North Pole, Alaska, USA who, for $10, sends your kids realistic letters pretending to be Santa Claus! It’s crazy, but as of last count, he’s sent 200,000 letters already, making him $2 million richer.

And do I even have to mention Alex Tew’s Million Dollar Homepage?

Yahoo Mail Beta Review

I fell too much in love with my customized Alleba email courtesy of Gmail for domains that I completely neglected to do my piece on Yahoo!’s new beta mail interface. What better time to do it when I’ve slightly gotten over the whole Gmail affair.

I have been using Yahoo! Mail Beta for slightly over a month now. No, I didn’t lie about my zip code just to try it, as I am aware that only the French and the Germans get to use it.

First, the bad stuff. My biggest and initial complaint with the new interface is it’s slow as hell. To think I am on DSL — but then again it’s PLDT Mydsl (which explains a lot). But that’s already beside the point. While I was logging in, this weird kid on a bouncing ball appears on the screen:

Google Accessible Search

There’s something new brewing at the Google Labs.

It’s called Accessible Search, a search engine tool by Google that sorts results based on the readability and simplicity of the page layout. This proves to be useful for those who are reading or sight impaired, as it gives them faster but not necessarily better access to information with minimal graphical distractions.
